Outdoor recreation is a great way to have fun with family and friends. There are many things you can do to better prepare yourself for a fun and safe experience.

CAMPING SAFETY

  • Pack a first aid kit. You never know if you will get bee sting, cut your leg or have an allergic relation. Pack band-aids, tweezers, insect repellent, pain relivers and sunscreen.
  • Bring emergency supplies. Maps, a compass, flashlights, knives, waterproof fire starter, shelter, whistle, warm clothing, extra food and water are all good things to have on hand.
  • Before leaving for a trip, always check the weather.
  • Before leaving, check to see if there are any campfire regulations. There are different restrictions at different locations. Build campfires in predesignated locations; keeping a fire far enough away from tent or anything flammable.
  • Never use a flame or heating device inside a tent. Use battery operated lights instead.
  • Make sure your fires are always attended. Be sure you have an area for a fire that cannot spread laterally or vertically. When putting the fire out, drown it with water making sure all embers and coals are wet. Embers that are buried within a pile tend to reignite later.
  •  Be cautious when using a propane stove.
  • Arrive early and inspect your campsite for any hidden dangers or hazards.
  • Use a tent that is flame retardant and pitch it a good distance away from the campfire.
  • Dispose of trash properly. Keep your campsite clean. Wildlife can be unpredictable and dangerous.
  • Watch out for bugs. Use insect repellant and avoid perfume and cologne.
  • Familiarize yourself with poisonous plants. If you come into contact with a poisonous plant, immediately rinse the affected area with water and use soothing lotion to calm the area.
  • Practice good hygiene. Wash hands properly after using the restroom and before handling food.

GRILLING SAFETY

Everyone loves a good BBQ dinner! Did you know gas grills are a factor in 8,900 home fires per year? Here are some grilling tips to keep you and your family fire safe.

  • If using a propane grill, be sure to check the gas tank for leaks prior to use.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat build up from the grills and trays below the grill.
  • Place the grill well away from the house, deck railings, eaves of the house and low, overhanging branches.
  • Always open your grill lid before lighting it.
  • Keep kids and pets away from the grill.
  • Never leave grill unattended when in use.
  • When you are finished grilling, let the coals cool completely before disposing in a metal container.
